Bone objects of the XIV- XVI centuries found during the excavations of the Lida Castle: a checker, a chess piece, a rook, fragments of a plate, a needle, a comb.
A chess rook dating from the XIV-XV centuries. It was found in the summer of 1978 on the territory of the Lida Castle during excavations by the famous Belarusian archaeologist Oleg Trusov. The artefact has perfect, immaculately observed proportions, a rounded, precisely grinded out base and is an example of the art of bone-carving. The fact that it is a rook in front of us is evidenced by the upper part of the sample with the peculiar “wings” of the roc (roc is a giant bird known from Arabic fairy tales, legends, according to the legends of ancient travelers).
A medieval craftsman depicted something in between an oriental figure and a natural Russian rook.
